The Breeders’ Mountain Battles is the album I most anticipated among this week’s releases. Popmatters called it a “challenging classic” while the New York Sun called teh record “near-perfect indie rock.” I wouldn’t go that far, but Mountain Battles is refreshing in its lack of pretension, clever songwriting, and lo-fi loveliness.

Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy releases the aptly titled Colin Meloy Sings Live!. Other new releases I can strongly recommend include Cloud Cult’s Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes), the expanded edition of Dark Meat’s Universal Indians, Fleet Foxes’ Sun Giant EP, Foals’ Antidotes, Jim Noir’s self-titled album, The Long Blondes’ Couples, Neva Dinova’s You May Already Be Dreaming, Richard Swift’s Richard Swift as Onasis EP, Man Man’s Rabbit Habits, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin’s Pershing, and Wye Oak’s If Children. Jason Anderson’s new album, The Hopeful and the Unafraid, deserves a special mention, and is at the top of my shopping list.
