20 FebruaryHarwich Massachusetts Fire Department has implemented a trial standpipe rack for its members. Many companies will utilize varying setups of length and size hose, as well as nozzles, adapaters and extras, to best suit their own capabilities. One of the leaders behind Harwich’s new rack is Dave LeBlanc. Some of you might know him from the infamous firefighter forum site, International Association of Crusty Old Jakes. (think of it as a New England version of the Watchdesk without all of the complaining).Some background on Harwich may help with understanding their rack.Harwich is a two-station department on what is called the mid-Cape Region. They operate with four engines, one truck, a Special Hazards apparatus and a healthy compliment of EMS, forestry, marine and staff vehicles. Staffing is three, sometimes two, in a four-group shift. The 35-member department is affiliated with IAFF Local 2124.After many months of collecting information and trying various setups, the following is how they created and intend their rack to be:150′ 1 3/4-inch line with Elkhart break-apart nozzles, in two (2) bundlesOne bundle is 100′, the other 50′15″ 2 1/2-inch hose with gated wye for connection to the standpipe riserMilk crate to hold chocks, spanners, gated wye and 2 1/2″ hoseBundles are held by typical seatbelt-style straps and stored on front bumper of enginePower Point Program, “Harwich Fire Department – Standpipe Pack System – Set up and Operation”Harwich’s rack is in service for more tesing and review.
